Fullerton Arboretum was founded in 1976. Dr. David Walkington and Dr. Eugene Jones proposed the idea of creating a botanical garden on the land that would later become the Fullerton Arboretum. It had previously been an orange grove located on the northern side of the California State University Fullerton campus when it was called Orange State College. The orange grove had died, and the land was unused until Dr. Walkington and Dr. Jones proposed the idea. With the help of their wives, Dr. Walkington and Dr. Jones raised enough money to fund the founding of the Fullerton Arboretum.
